Singing in tone languages: Phonetic and structural effects

چکیده

Let’s begin with the question that ultimately motivates this research. Singing in tone languages seems to make contradictory demands on voice pitch. On the one hand, in any language, a song is an arrangement of pitches (‘notes’) based on musical considerations (melody, harmony, verse structure, etc.). On the other hand, in a tone language, song texts (‘words’ or ‘lyrics’) include pitch specifications that are purely linguistic (lexical and/or grammatical). Modifications to the linguistically specified pitch may change the meaning of the words. So this leads to an obvious question: How does the use of voice pitch for musical purposes coexist with the use of voice pitch for phonological purposes in a tone language? Much more straightforwardly, we might want to phrase the question as it was expressed in the title of an influential article by Wong and Diehl (2002): How can the lyrics of a song in a tone language be understood? These questions are the starting point for everything I’m going to say today.

Referential labeling can facilitate phonetic learning in infancy.

All languages employ certain phonetic contrasts when distinguishing words. Infant speech perception is rapidly attuned to these contrasts before many words are learned, thus phonetic attunement is thought to proceed independently of lexical and referential knowledge. Here, evidence to the contrary is provided. Ninety-eight 9-month-old English-learning infants were trained to perceive a non-nati...

A Weighted-Constraint Model of F0 Movements

This dissertation develops a grammar of phonetic implementation of phonologically significant F0 (pitch) events, which is applicable across languages. Through production studies of various languages, we show that phonetic universals exist which govern phonetic realization of the phonological representations of tones. In the previous literature, there have been two conflicting views concerning t...

Phonetic segmentation of singing voice using MIDI and parallel speech

When analyzing singing voice signal, it is required to know the boundaries of each phonetic unit in the singing voice samples. However, due to prolonged vowels in the singing voice, it is not easy to accurately align a singing voice with the phonetic sequence of its lyrics by conventional speech recognition approach. This paper proposes a solution for the phonetic annotation of the singing voic...

Preservation of lexical tones in singing in a tone language

Lexical tones are important for expressing meaning and usually have high priority in tone languages. This can create conflicts with sentence intonation in spoken language and with melodic templates in singing since all of these are transmitted by pitch. The main question in this investigation is whether a language (in our case the Mon-Khmer language Kammu) with a simple two-tone system uses sim...
